Flat Roofing

Hot Bitumen & Felt

Often used in paving for roads, airport runways & car parks, heated bitumen is also commonly applied to manyFlat Roofing roofs with layers of felt.

Bitumen is a substance few of us are familiar with but which many of us live within just a few feet of. Obtained naturally or as a residue from distilled petrol, bitumen is an oil-based element applied hot to roofs to bond roofing membranes to themselves and insulation materials as well as layers of vapor control to a variety of substrates.

Our trained operatives here at Mick Bamber Roofing carefully apply hot bitumen in front of the felt roofing roll which is then unrolled into the bitumen, spreading it to give a continuous coating for the full width. The felt, typically bonded by three layers, is bedded with the hot bitumen on top of the structural roof, resulting in the creation of a waterproof system ideal for garages, sheds and small extensions.

40 years ago, the use of pour and roll hot bitumen and mineral felt began to replace sheet metal and asphalt on modern buildings as a cheap, fast-track alternative to the more expensive, traditional flat roof systems.

Now, however, the current range of materials available to our team is far superior to those typically used 30 years ago. A life span of 7-15 years for the older, traditional felts has increased to a guaranteed life span of 20 years thanks to the modern materials, with some properly-installed felt roof systems achieving at least a half century.

Rubber Roofing

For decades, thousands of industrial buildings worldwide were fitted with EPDM rubber roofs and now the switch to smaller, residential properties is underway. Mick Bamber Roofing is here to ensure you don’t miss out.

EPDM is an extremely durable synthetic rubber roofing membrane widely used in many low-slope buildings. Often up to 2 feet thick, EPDM rubber roofs can be installed either fully adhered or mechanically attached, with the seams of the roofing system sealed with liquid adhesives or specially formulated tape.

This environmentally friendly system has been used to cover the decking of flat roofs where the product is glued to the decking boards or substrates and can be installed on both new and existing roofs, overlaying the decking of the old roof, provided that it can carry the load of the new roofing system.

The excellence durability of a rubber roof means that it is highly resistant to ozone, UV radiation and extreme high or low temperatures which result in a life expectancy of up to 50 years, considerably longer than most other roof materials. That’s not all, the roof’s flexibility with temperatures enables year round installation.

Once installed by our team, an EPDM rubber roof will require very little, if any, maintenance and this feature, combined with the membrane’s unique durability, result in a very low life-cycle cost. What more could you want?

GRP Fiberglass Roofing

Glass Reinforced Plastic (GRP), or fibreglass, is a robust and long-lasting type of modern flat roofing ideal for garages and extensions.

Similar to the shiny outcome appearance of a liquid plastic roof, a GRP system is both a manageable and tough roofing product that can be smoothly applied by our team and then topped up with a new layer a few years down the line.

Glass fibres are initially woven with plastic to create a fibreglass matting which is then, along with a base-coat of fibreglass resin, taped to the joints in the timber boards that form the roof structure. A further base-coat of the matting and resin is then applied to the whole of the roof area before a top coat is added to complete the roof surface.

Fibreglass is lightweight, very strong, handles foot traffic and accommodates the movement that occurs in many modern buildings.

Another huge benefit of fibreglass is that it is maintenance-free and here at Mick Bamber Roofing we will also lightly sand the fibreglass top coat and apply a new layer a few years after installation which extends the life of your GRP roof past 30 years.

Liquid Plastic

Compatible with almost all roof designs and substrates, the use of liquid plastic creates a completely seamless roofing membrane which is both tough and waterproof.

Liquid plastic is an exceptional solution to roofing problems with a clean and shiny end result. The Rooftech team use liquid membranes that don’t require the application of heat during their installation so the liquid plastic is applied cold to your roof.

Roof projects with difficult access, restrictive clearances and multiple or odd-shaped penetrations can prove very challenging for even the most adaptive roofing membranes – in which case a liquid plastic option is an excellent alternative as it is ideal in getting to difficult places or around skylights.

The toughness and rubbery characteristic of liquid plastic roofing membranes also means they can withstand both thermal and structural movement as well as being resistant to foot traffic, UV radiation, pollutants in the air and available in anti-slip surfaces.

Mick Bamber Roofing can apply the liquid plastic over an existing roof without the need to remove the old material so your home below is not disrupted during work on the roof. Insulated roof systems are also available and, depending on the process used which we are happy to advise you on, liquid plastic products are guaranteed to last from ten to 25 years.
